Fun Valentine Ideas

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! It was so great dropping the kiddos off at school today with their sacks full of Valentines. Everyone was grinning from ear to ear as they proudly passed out their special cards.

Valentine cards, just like the holiday, are special. They are little sentiments of affection, not only for your loved ones, but for everyone you appreciate - family, neighbors, co-workers, teachers, and friends. It's that one day of the year where guys can embrace hearts without embarrassment, and where all of us ladies can eat our share of chocolate without any guilt!

As a tribute to this special holiday, and the age old tradition of Valentine giving, we've designed a couple of fun Valentine ideas for you. We hope that you feel inspired by them!

Happy Valentine's Day, from all of us at

Sweet Tradition:

Our first Valentine idea was designed by ScrapBugLane.com design team member, Selestina. She used traditional colors and elements, such as hearts, ribbon, rosy reds, and pretty pinks, to create a sweet treat anyone would enjoy! Selestina started by putting a handful of red and silver Hershey brand kisses in a small, jewel style, ziploc bag. She then created a fold-over tab to adhere to the top of the bags using the Cosmo Cricket Hey Sugar Papers in the 'Cupid' and 'Heart String' patterns. An eyelet set in the corner allows a simple flourish of ribbon, and a dainty die- cut swirl, cut out of Wausau pearlescent paper, adds a touch of whimsy to the front. She finished off the back (not shown) with her daughter's name die-cut from white cardstock. Check out the box full of finished Valentines - simply sweet, simply adorable! I apologize in advance for the size of these pics! I couldn't figure out how to resize them without losing the definition!

This Valentine uses the 'Cupid' pattern cardstock for the fold-over tab. Notice the eyelet and ribbon in the corner. Very cute!

Bags were decorated with tabs cut from the 'Cupid' (viewer's left) and 'Heart String' (viewer's right) paper patterns - Cosmo Cricket 'Hey Sugar' collection. These papers are our monthly featured sale item! To view the entire 'Hey Sugar' collection just click on the title of this post.

Carefully displayed in this festive box, these Valentines are cute alone, but dramatic when shown all together! Imagine walking into class with these.

A Valentine for Boys Who Are "Out of This World":

As the mother of boys, Valentine's Day always poses certain challenges (no pink, no kisses, no flowers, etc.), so this year I went non-traditional and created a Valentine inspired by the last frontier - space! I placed a package of Orbit brand gum in larger size, jewel style, ziploc bags. For a little added interest, I sprinkled stars die-cut from yellow cardstock in the baggie with the gum. I designed a simple, fold-over, 'nose cone' tab for the top of the bag, and a 'booster' style tab for the bottom. I cut these tabs from Wausau metallic card stock (Excalibur Steel for some, Majestic Blue for the others). I added a 'pull out' flame from the bottom 'booster' tab that reads "You're out of this world!"

A Heart with wire antennae, google eyes, and ric-rac legs is the only traditional element on these cards. I used very unlikely papers. The booster flame, heart, and planets were all cut from the 'Hopscotch Kids' pad by K & Company. I've shown the paper patterns I used in one of the photos below.

As a final touch, I wrote the kid's names, or the words 'Thank You', on the bottom tab with a white pen.

This turned out to be a great way to create a Valentine little boys could feel proud of, and they were fun to make (even if gluing on all those antennae did get tedious)!

Three of the finished Valentines show the shape of the top and bottom tabs, designed to resemble a 'nose cone' and 'booster' respectively.

This close up shows the 'pull out' booster flame and message.

This photo shows two of the K & Company 'Hopscotch Kids' paper patterns used. The 'water color' stripes were perfect for the flame 'pull outs', and the planets were simple to cut out from the polka dot design.

Cute for Any Occasion:

Our final Valentine idea was actually designed as a birthday gift, but I thought it was cute enough to use for any occasion, especially Valentine's Day! Design team member, Dede, made this 'card' by first cutting a simple bag out of Wausau Metallic cardstock in 'Sparkling Merlot'. She then embellished the bag with a series of tags, hearts, and flowers cut from the 'Living Life' papers by Around the Block. To add a personal touch, Dede stamped her friend's initial on the side of the bag with white ink - simple and sweet. Rather than tissue paper, Dede chose to line her mini bag with a scrap of tulle.

This bag can be filled with chocolates, jewelry, or even scrapbooking embellishemts (brads, eyelets and the like). This bag happened to be filled with the latter - don't you wish you could peak inside? The end result was a darling, very personal gift for a special friend. Cute and appropriate for a number of occasions!

This miniature bag gets a whimsical touch with tags and shapes cut from Around the Block 'Living Life' papers.

The recipients initial stamped on the side of the bag adds a personal touch. Also note the heart shaped brad on front!

A die cut tab cleverly adhered to the back adds 360 degrees of fun to this three dimensional creation.
